Our weekend getaway to the charming town of Florence, Oregon, was lovely. Yet, the real highlight of our return journey north was a long-anticipated visit to Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City.
I was aware of the incredible beauty of this iconic spot. I was thrilled to have a reservation for a Track Chair. This was made possible by the wonderful volunteers at DavidsChair.org.
Arriving at the bustling beach parking lot, we encountered the familiar challenge of finding accessible parking. As Leesa circled, searching for an open spot (a testament to Cape Kiwanda’s popularity on a beautiful day!), I gave the provided contact number a call. True to their word, a friendly volunteer soon arrived with the Track Chair. They simply asked me to call when we were finished – such a seamless process!
Once Leesa managed to find parking and retrieve my regular wheelchair, I was ready for my beach debut. Rolling down the ramp and onto the sand in the Track Chair was an incredible feeling. We’ve visited Cape Kiwanda countless times. I have admired its grandeur from above while Leesa strolled the beach. Finally experiencing the beach firsthand with Leesa by my side was something truly special.

The Track Chair allowed Leesa and me to explore the entire expanse of the beach. We even ventured over to the fascinating rock formations on the north side. Under a sunny sky with a gentle breeze, it was an absolute joy to navigate the sand with such ease.

Once we were back at the parking lot, we made a brief call. That was all it took for the volunteer to meet us. Within minutes, we were trailing her to the track chair’s designated storage spot. Leesa, ever efficient, had already gone to bring the car around for me.

Another fantastic day made possible by the dedication of accessible travel advocates at DavidsChair.org!
